Story : The universe is moving closer together: Where was just more of the warp needed to move from one system to another open, suddenly all local portals that wormholes same abbreviations within the Milky . offer The Iconian , those described in legends 'Demons of Air and Darkness' is back - with devastating consequences. Freighters that still just flew Sol system find themselves suddenly in the home quadrant of Dominions again, unexpected visitors fill without matching feathers hospitals of Armus IX and the Malon conveniently in one of the portals antimatter waste dumped out the forced evacuation of a human colony in the immediate vicinity of DS9 .
But the station's staff must cope not only with the mammoth task of saving of over three million colonists, but also with the small everyday problems that everyone carries around with him.
will be required to the warrant Andorian Shar before his mother for his decision to serve in the Starfleet , while related to Kira on a short trip in the Delta Quadrant not only the creator of space pollution tries, but also their faith. The Jem'Hadar Taran'atar recognizes, however during the struggle against the portal lurking Hirogen rudimentary motives Odos him to send on this mission.
largely unmoved by these events, however Quark On behalf of the Orion Syndicate Iconian the negotiation with the representatives, who offer all the political powers its portal network for sale. But the big surprise, as he recognizes the negotiators from the other side: No one less than his cousin and rival Gaila was hired to thrash out to see who offers the space mafia. Although
the talks go well, Quark must recognize quickly that he still Gaila grudge that his own cousin did not just financially ruined, but also targeted by hit squads of the general's Nassuc made. Even before then it can come to a conclusion, we find quark exposed absurd allegations that convince his green-skinned business partners to do the little Ferengi immediately make silence and for ever ...

praiseworthy aspects : Keith RA DeCandido remains true to his style: As in "The Laws of the Federation " or "quintessence " is also the author of this book concentrated on background knowledge. The numerous allusions (eg to the beaming with approaching the speed of light in " The strange memory ", see p. 227), cross-references (eg to in "The Laws of the Federation" mentioned conflict between Delta agents and Correanern, see p. 29) and reviews (eg, the ironic dig at Kira's pregnancy, see p. 40) are as numerous as the guest stars, which otherwise so fine People like Scotty (see p. 34), Garak (see p. 238) or Mackenzie Calhoun (see p. 31) count.
One of these stars is highlighted: Gul Macet . This Cardassians from the TNG episode "The Wounded is mainly why so noteworthy because he was by none other than Marc Alaimo embodies. The actor, who previously had been several roles at TNG taken, was sent in the first place by his performance Gul Dukat DeCandido famous and knows how to drive with the fact literary hoax. He also explains this apparent similarity, which themselves are Kira (see p. 111) and Nog (p. 234) aware of cousins (p. 121) and helps to relieve Erklärungsnot of the official canon.
But references to episodes, books or actors ranging from DeCandido not. The author of books and various other comics series, it did not take to hide a small Easter eggs, apply to these works.
It has me as a great lover of sci-fi series "Farscape " very pleased that Ro on a ship called " Zelbinion " was used, although I think I may very well be, why .. "[ .] whose names she had no one can explain. .

But yet discovered: The Zelbinion

general, you have to say that the author has managed an entertaining novel. Of course can not be considered any of the countless characters on DS9 in such a book is sufficient and therefore it is only natural that DeCandido picks out the raisins . In particular, Shar, Kira, Taran'atar, Quark and Ro Laren learn more lighting, the sometimes profound fails (in the first three characters), but sometimes amusing (in the latter two).
But this is different does not mean that the other characters worth mentioning, or even idle. Thus, Vaughn must prove as a crisis manager (see, eg, S. 189ff.) And the Trill Ezri experiencing serious personal problems that resulted from his involuntary association with the Dax (see p. 130ff.).
As if this were not enough, DeCandido also brings another new character on board - a fact that could complicate the following authors may work, but here the concept fits well and gives the station a sexy note (see S . 239ff.).

criticisms made aspects: Although I am basically an integration with the canon and in as many references rejoice, I must admit that you can be here quickly drowned by the flood of information. Reason is the variety of names, which accepts many species or many places you at some point without reflection only. This is a shame because so little hints as to Farscape (or those that my colleague ant was in its review identify) in the mass of new names and then quickly disappear. Nevertheless, this book provides
also impressive, giving the feeling that you missed something. The reason is the lack of other books that belong to the "Gateway " series .
"demons of air and darkness" is merely a novel from a series that deals with the portals Iconia closer working. Although a translator Humble Christian attention to that fact and insured in a footnote, " A knowledge of the other title is not for the understanding of the ongoing book series at Cross Cult necessary. "(p. 316) and also mentioned there that the New Frontier of this series will be released probably also in German, but a resolution of the epoch-border action is barred by the reader. One wonders at the end of the book that is somewhere that the portals will now remain forever, or why the Voyager not she uses to return home.
justified in this series is and the stark split in the work, because actually there are two books in one: Part 1 "demons of air and darkness" and Part 2, "Horn and Ivory". Although I am Cross Cult very grateful for having the second part (see p. 253ff.) Integrated in this edition, but I must admit though, that this greatly in quality and significance of the first, more on fixed Adventure partially lifted.
central theme here is the fact Bajoran religion for prophet - a sensitive issue in my eyes. The religious aspect of Deep Space Nine's for me was always a stigma on the series, especially episodes like "Holy visions "therefore came frighteningly esoteric rather than to seriously deal with the matter 'religiosity'.
Unfortunately, they very suddenly on in book form. Instead of the path taken, a critical analysis, which was eingschlagen with " revelation " continue, builds "Horn and Ivory" open to the aforementioned episode (cf. p. 291ff.) And lost in a turgid prophetic vision, without adequately to relate to the problems of the pariah status of Stationskommandantin. There remains only the hope that close the gap next novels.
As Europeans bothered me also the Disney Park of prejudice, which the name itself after his Italian-born DeCandido here called 'Europa Nova. Besides kitschy stereotypes about Southerners flirting (see p. 136f.) Espresso addict extended families (see p. 137f.) Novoneogotischer or architecture (see p. 73) one can see the 'New Europe' little more than a larger rural town with Italian, or gripe at best English place names. If there should be only the author had the intention to live out his stereotypes, he can name the planets Italia Minor or Mezzogiorno Nova . What
me but even more than political correctness was missing was a final Essay, as he wrote Julian Wang often for the various previously published works. Something like this would certainly have been helpful, and would even subject it well enough. For example, you can
would write something about the Andorian and their population crisis, the lost civilizations like Iconian need to look in more detail or history Bajor will explain in more detail.
The absence of this final point is sad because these final remarks were always something that stood out the cross-cult-Heyne-books from the predecessors, and even the American originals.

Translation: When Christian Humble translated there is hardly anything objectionable. The errors are minimal, such as " sinbd " (p. 159), and even if terms such as "foreign officer" (p. 31) and " medikit " (instead of 'Medkit', p. 40) something to Heyne remember lying quality worlds, if not galaxies between the two products.
However, I do wonder why Root Beer "(p. 64) was nontransferable, while in" birch beer "" herbal beer "(p. 249) was. Also what is behind the term "ignorant Stoffel " (p. 31) is hidden, you have me ollem Zoni explain well again.
But these two examples are an example of this initiative, I would like to translators, and I therefore do not hold against them.
Then you earlier, that the terms " Shelliak " (instead of ' Sheliak ', p. 62) and " Paluku " (instead of ' Palukoo ', p. 287) taken at incorrect spellings from the original was. Not for nothing, there are now Memory Alpha, where I once had a correction really happy.

Anachronisms: There is much in such a thorough study fails to complain about here. The only
really noteworthy contradiction is the fact that the Orion Erin Treir is described as a slave of the influential independent Malic. She is a whore in a privileged patriarchal organized mafia, they could thank Quark and Ro Laren escape.
Looking at the Enterprise episode " The connection " but derives a very different picture: the strong pheromones Orionerinnen they can be in the men only beguiled Enforcers are female commands to the actual drivers and rulers of Orion Society.
for this contradiction can not blame DeCandido, however, for his 2001's book was in the U.S. impossible to anticipate the development of the 2004 first episode aired. But the author did
exercise but elsewhere neglect: while it allows the Malon own distance measure (see p. 17) that use the ancient Bajorans very human kilometers (see p. 288).

Conclusion: In the usual way that Keith RA DeCandido once again taken advantage of the cannon and it cobbled together an entertaining and celebrating the fourth volume of the Deep Space Nine series.
differs, however, "demons of air and darkness" slightly off the path, the one taken by the previous volumes, especially in the second round and weaker back part "Horn and Ivory" to the esoteric approaches that are already in the series more bad than good.
also missing from the end of the resolution of that storyline, which deals with the Iconia portals and also the final essay, the recent Star Trek novels by Cross Cult have done so especially, could have been easier for the reader's understanding.
