story: On his trip to Romulus to the (pre-) final resting place of James T. Kirk after his death on Veridian III get a Spock the ghosts of the past.
recalls in a series of flashbacks he, at multiple locations and events of his life that shaped him finally to the man, who assumed the difficult task Vulcans and Romulans bring closer together again.
So the ambassador takes the reader on a comprehensive journey into his past. Together you can visit the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-B shortly after the death of Starfleet legend Jim Kirk, insights obtained in the complicated father-son relationship between Sarek and Spock or is witness to the first mission, the young Vulcan, along with Captain Christopher Pike undertook.
But Spock is not trapped in his memories. His
Odyssey takes him from the desert Veridian III back to Earth, where Spock's best friend brings a contrary testimony last deep friendship respect ...

praiseworthy aspects :

Hans Oetz Valley: The work has some very interesting points and is subject to an ever-present topic: the communication. Spock, the laconic and sometimes draconian Methuselah of the Star Trek universe (which is also due to the Leonard Nimoy living - " May his beard longer and are light never "), goes through in this story three phases the call.
In the first he tries stoically the Smalltalk-enthusiasm of a Saurian to counter silence, because he sees no sense in it. Easily "thawed" he comes to a Bolian , with whom he shares many of its own interests if appropriate information. As Picard Last is on the spot connects to the Spock friendship. Picard with the conversation takes the shortest, but emotionally more intense than the others. The communication between the characters is never really irrelevant. Although the result will Saurian Smalltalk, but all the nice keywords which he einwirft fizzle, and give the Vulcan them morally depth. Besides
are there other sources the red thread can be viewed as positive, such as the home bringing of Kirk's corpse, the self-determination in the face of Spock's otherness and inner doubt or the stringent unpredictability of mental leaps. Each item in itself is exciting.
The presence of a Saurian at the beginning of the story immediately brings motivation to read on. Appear in various places the emergence of the three-legged, three-armed aliens in "Mirror Images " was mentioned laudable, so that the tactic was " first one (else) scores, then an acquaintance " repeated here.
nostalgia spray the many ships and races and the design the NCC-1701 bridge looks so nice fit cramped that one back in the days when there was no broadband, feels.
The starting point of the entire action, Spock's motives remain some time in the dark. This tension is built up. Jumping between individual experiences of Spock's life illustrates the way the formation and the origin of his loyalty and his friendship. Through the many cracks in different times, the reader can also also a welcome reunion with old friends like Scotty , pill , Kirk, Pike, Saavik and Dr. Chapel celebrate.

Turon47 "Spock" is committed to harmony. Well, the come into the years Halbvulkanier openly voiced such a feeling may perhaps seem trivial, but the book of the same name, attempts a candid bridge to overcome all those differences, the movies and series sometimes quarreled. Since
emblazoned the landscape of Vasquez Rocks that herhielt in the eleventh film of the planet as a backdrop volcano, around a juvenile Spock's face, as is already in " Star Trek III: The Search for Spock " was seen (see p. 19).
games as introduced in TNG " Parris Squares" (p. 38) or in the popular DS9 " Dabo " (p. 47) are chronologically interwoven with the larger time frame and part of a larger story.
especially sensitive do you deal with the Orions . Here crosses David Messina sent the ship form from the series Enterprise (see p. 5) with the uniforms of TAS episodes like "The Pirates of Orion " (cf. S25f.) - A conciliatory gesture to the often neglected treated series.
an interesting insight into the history of the later comics, the interview with the author Scott Tipton , together responsible for the act with his brother and conception is illustrated stories.
especially if you read these lines, given the many guest appearances, flashbacks and insights of a much higher priority.
Unlike the previous " gateway to the Apocalypse " does this work with much less 'Action' from. This need not necessarily be a disadvantage, because the character Spock is here sensitive to a few excerpts enriches life, knew about the fans so far yet. With each new page further white spots are repaid to the biographical map of the central figure and interwoven harmony with what already betrayed Film and Television have.
"Balance" also occupies a niche narrative that proves that even on the man who appears in 79 episodes of TOS, seven feature films, a double episode of TNG and countless books, there is still much to tell.

criticisms made aspects :

Hans Oetz Valley lights off! Spock on!
Hach would, "it was beautiful. But the comic becomes entangled in a diffuse joining events, which would not Kurt Schwitters can make Dadaist . True to the Motto " I've only this one sentence. " appear suddenly on people and then disappear. But why just the league of extraordinary friend must be, is unclear. It gives the impression that Spock has experienced almost always interesting when viewers were hanging in front of the telly. The new characters are simply a means to an end. The Saurian tells so much of interest that it is a shame as he goes. The Bolian has no character depth and Knoxville, although the head of a top-secret Starfleet experiment, but a hasty jumping into the field, which unfortunately screwed it at the very moment when Pike and Spock stand next to him and then never seen again was (and wormholes loud are the current Earth Explorer is not!).
The thing with the "worm holes" is because one of the few exciting passages in the comic. Otherwise, the action along with ripples of tension among the unknown reaches of the possible, so that not even a slight noise is heard when it flooded and sank drowned ideas Easter eggs. Overall, the entire comic
has no real climax. Actually the end of the right start. The teachings of Spock on Romulus are the true potential of the story. But as it is eaten all begins.
But what is missing because of content is supplemented by the visual quality still. The preliminary drawings and sketches at the end of the comic brimming with dynamism and prove the vaunted skills Messina. I was another stylistic device allowed when I say: The preliminary drawings have more color than the Endumsetzung. Messina you can probably possible to make no accusations, but what happens to the characters is not acceptable. When should watch the pictures the viewer is sometimes asks who this or that might be. And maybe he is on it then it would have been the chief engineer must act (p. 81), because all the other characters are not so fat and bloated. In the preliminary drawings but Scotty is beautifully designed. Similarly holds for other characters. Picard you recognize only because Spock speaks in (See p. 92f.). Artists such as Tom J. McCraw were masters of their craft and colorists were called, while their counterparts do seem to have today only remotely to do with color. Painting by numbers would conjure up in about a similar result, but if Traversi and Cinabro and other studios for example, now consider new Jeff Koons , I have to say no, unfortunately. Also, I can only assume that this type of grade ink drawing is modern, but nuclear energy is also still widely regarded as the non plus ultra-always to attract a media silly season-fad as a comparison.
The computer took over in the past Years more and more important tasks. But you have to look at the pictures? This is now of course a rhetorical question. Or not? I mean, we all know that computer-processed images may be grainy, but why do you see that so clearly (see p. 50 and p. 65)?
is the way there are other small errors, such as a word-twister Saurian (p. 6), two shuttle Enterprise at Filos IV, although only one losflog (p. 39f.), The dubious nature of many biological facial muscles during Saurian (for Example . p. 48) - overall, the human likeness of the Saurian criticism - and the presence of a plaque on the USS Enterprise-Collins (p. 67). The story would
I do not miss too much, but deal only with the historical structure a little:
A kaleidoscope of spring, summer, autumn and winter. If God back in time really well existed, he would really have to know that in the 21st Century after the death of his son, the scientific component of Star Trek will have been reduced to mere story set pieces.
The present work describes an alarming degree what happens when verschnippeln the Norns ; tangled thread of life, and someone who is on it looks from outside, takes only true one episodic life puzzle, in which the parts are all somehow fit been playing together seem.
But somehow not.
"Spock" is subject to this - I actually really liked - set piece of storytelling. This narrative method has great potential to fight off boredom and not thoroughly thought out move just to move into a completely different situation. But then the individual episodes have also to be meaningful and not just be mere reviews, which are all one and the same explanation.
Too bad it could have been so beautiful.

Turon47 : (. Cf. p. 107ff) If you look at the impressive sketches of Messina at the end of the specification for watching, germinate deep in the bowels of the reader's secret desire been held on this whole issue would be in this simple black and white style.
"Balance" is that is compared to the charm of a coloring book - being charged to the coloration was clearly the details. In addition to the main protagonists Spock (see p. 10, p. 12 or p. 74) even Kirk (see p. 61, p. 67 or p. 69) and pill (see p. 69 or p. 88) so badly made that character mappings to be based largely on conjecture - from all the other characters to mention.
But the really distracted from the only true problem.
While reading, I waited namely all times ensure that the action would now begin at last. Imagine is was my surprise when I arrived suddenly in the last pages of the book, and the 'story' said to have been told!
Confused, I flipped back and looked at the pages again. But apart even more spelling errors and other anachronisms because I found nothing! A fortiori, nothing that a true story could fulfill. Now some readers may
not entirely wrong to interject here that the sub-plots, ie "Spock's flashbacks of the real star of this comic. Of course, they illuminate the background and motives for the actions of the ambassador, but so extraordinary match, or even consistently, they are not.
I will try to explain this charge with three examples: The Story
to Saavik and Peter Preston is chewed to differ only slightly from the defaults from the second feature film "The Wrath of Khan (cf. p. 81ff.) "ex.
already refuted Spock's favorite from the Kobayashi-Maru test , once again she complains to her mentor-to-face with the inadequacies of the people and once again there is an accident in the engine room with the participation of Peter Preston.
Why? Saavik and Preston do not offer the possibility of cross-use? And why should the nephew of Scotty's actually almost identical accident harmless survive, only to the immediately following dahinzusiechen miserably?
This short presentation makes simply no sense and seems a little labored, especially when one keeps in mind how author Scott Tipton in Horsens interview, boasts These kinds of minor characters make without regard to losses in the spotlight (see p. 106) . More
makes sense, however, the appearance Jim Kirk, after all, the thin story revolves around a secret, and yes most likely illegal reburial of his remains. Now you have to admit that the bland little action is therefore lame and without notable highlights, but at least the man has any presence, whose close friendship with Spock here in the center of attention. Sadly, it will be breakfast with just 19 sentences, of which the majority of the extent of " annual report, Mr. Spock! "(p. 61)," What? "(p. 64) or" Thank you, Patricia. "(p. 69) does not significantly exceed. The little-as such a significant 'rescue mission' for the ship to an admiral, however, remains the only moment of Spock's real crime of necrophilia at all in direct context to the person shall, for which he is doing this (the memorial plate on page 10 et seq.'s Rather an indirect context). Of course it's too little to the value of the intimate friendship between men's needs. Finally
was also made to the vexed subject of the indecent touching. For those who do not know: Vulcans do not like direct contacts, as the telepathically gifted beings see it as a breach of their privacy.
This shows finally at two points of the book for Christine Chapel (see p. 34) and José Tyler (see p. 38) very clearly.
This knowledge extended only to the second part of the comic, especially because this motif is not consistently followed through. Elsewhere, one encounters numerous examples, in that this volcanic trait does not matter (see p. 9, p. 22, p. 44 or p. 98).

translation: How much can accommodate such a comic potential spelling errors at all?
Not too much, of course. The few text covers a limited amount of balloons that launch or onomapoetischen expressions (" VRMMMMMMMM " p. 8, " RRRRRIPP " p. 21 or " KLANK " p. 25). He has consistently written great and avoids the very fact a greater susceptibility to error.
but natural hazards and the overall capitalization poses: And it's not a big 'ß', has to use an appropriate text on a double 's' - which is not always an elegant solution. The
sometimes even at all is no solution, one can at the word "wilderness " remarkable, because this term was not even in the old German spelling with a 'ß', let alone with a double 's' written.
But this error is only the prelude to an example of hasty and so sloppy translation. If
Saavik on page 81 " engine room, management report! exclaims, "I am surprised that the intercom them at all is correct. Well this could be construed as a second small oversights.
If the Saurian abused the dative by " I have my complete Lega constituent sold. "(p. 47) are the best that one could, of course," what "question, or dismiss it even as a third oversight.
Finally, if the same person the dubious Orions by the sentence "After all, even fly it off for years this way. "(p. 6) navigational skills confers, one wonders yet been seriously put as translator and editor on such a small amount of text so many mistakes, or were overlooked.

anachronisms : In the accompanying interview pat Scott Tipton, self-declared mastermind of the Star Trek comic book world, belonging to the page 106 itself on the back:

I must say though, that we make in the run always very thorough our Hausaufgbaen to ensure that nothing that we want to do, contrary to previous or subsequent, is still planned stories.

brave words for someone who remarked, as my colleague Hans Oetz Valley already allowed, that the badge is to find a ship of the Constitution-class to a representative of the Soyuz-class (see p. 67) . Granted, this is as well as embarrassing (even for me) difficult to detect.
For all the love to the already much-vaunted harmony is the inclusion of the Death Star from Star Wars like star basis, from the eleventh film too far are for 'thoroughly completed homework' (p. 53), because after all between the events of the movie (2258) and the period of the action comics (about 2371) scarce 113 years. In this period should be as an ancient building concept be obsolete, because even the Vanguard-oriented Starbase 6 from the remastered version of " computer M5 " (ca. 2268) were at TNG ("The alien memory ") never see.
course, one can argue about if necessary. It is undisputed, however, that ships Constellation-class , as can be seen on the same image, at this time have been placed definitely out of service - during the space battles against the Dominion were the ships (as opposed to those of the Miranda-class ) is already not part of the fleet.
is equally nonsensical, the fact that the independent Survivalists Captain Moxx a Danube-class runabout rights (see p. 77) that actually a federal patent in the hands of independent Registered owners do not should have no place, because, finally, sets the Starfleet like the risk of uncontrolled technology transfer. Even on old ships you can, after all, according to the two-parter " reunification " prefer to space cemeteries more or less alone to rot - why there are so relatively fresh piece of technology to a private person? And
keyword Constellation and Miranda-class: According to the episode " Sherlock Holmes Data" the USS Victory was a ship of the Constellation class. On page eight, however it is clearly recognizable as an offshoot of the Miranda-class. Had one can not simply let the two ships change places? Exchanges must have
Tipton, despite protestations to the contrary (see p. 106) also Saurian - with the Borg . For so beautiful I the presence of these lizards also found men, so little to convince me the statement that this species in the "Hive " (p. 31) would live. Or was the Saurian in fact an agent of the Borg, who was sent by his queen for talks Romulus? At least that would
fit William Shatner novel "The Return " - were it not disturb a small detail would be: In the book ends up also Spock at Veridian, but there is the body of Kirk from the combined Romulans and Borg assimilated and brought back to life. But
Tipton Shatner seems to contribute to Star Trek world of books deliberately ignore and push the story into that alternate reality that readers of my blog as " Shatnerversum " is known.
Shatner is here on a bed of his parents' farm to rest. Conciliatory, but why are there actually on that site a windmill (see p. 90)? For all the picturesque beauty, particularly ecological understanding and all the romantic impulses: Something is perhaps in the Park Potsdam Sanssouci in , but not on a small farm somewhere in Iowa ....

Conclusion: An interesting insight into the life and thought Spock can offer this work without question. But who expects more than a poorly zusammengepuzzlete story, a great climax, or even a right of action, should stay away from this comic.
annoying Too often with crude illustrations, unnecessary anachronisms and stupid spelling mistakes. The great sounds Tipton at the end of the book, in his interview to fit, at least not to the tune minor Concerto that "Spock" at the end of play.

Memorable Quotes :

" Remember this day, Picard. Because if they end, they are never aware of. "
