Starfleet cadets 11th The missing crew

Book Review Friedman, Michael Jan: Starfleet cadets. Vol.11. The missing crew. Heyne, 1996/1995.

Story: On a dead planet discovered an away team of the USS Tripoli a strange creature: Resting on a stone slab there is a machine whose external form (more or less) exact copy of a human form.
As expected, however, the colonists can not track down on the planet's surface, the group switched to the tin man, to get the desired answers about the fate of that group. But the Android can not provide any useful information. Although it does not receive satisfactory
statements about the mysterious disappearance of the 411 residents Omicron Thetas marked, this moment the birth of an extraordinary Starfleet officer: Data .
Shortly after its activation, is applying the Android on the advice of the captains of Tripoli at the Starfleet Academy . But Data's way is so long as stony, and the wheels of bureaucracy grind slowly interstellar.
defeated only after three years he can do on the way to Earth. But data and three other candidates who are on board a ship of the Oberth-class get ahead of schedule an idea of what a great responsibility with their career choice is associated.
Shortly after the USS Yosemite namely a foreign, possibly hostile minded ship shall disappear, suddenly the entire crew with the exception of four young Academy candidate. The Android needs his leadership to demonstrate combat drones defend and solve the mystery of the missing crew ...

praiseworthy aspects : In the television series " Trek - The Next Generation " distinguished themselves above all those episodes with a high degree of attractiveness, in which the android Data was the center of action. And without question include episodes like " Sherlock Holmes Data", "Data's days" or the two-part "Battle for the Klingon Empire "of the highlights of the series.
this successful driving force should be inserted for a series of books, therefore only a logical step. The series "Star Fleet cadet" imposes itself in this context is a natural. Only this can biographical gaps are closed, because an eventful childhood was the machine man's not already granted. Therefore, it is not surprising that this work begins with a truly epochal bang: (. P. 9ff) Activation Data's .
The reader gets a glimpse of the surrounding circumstances, get to know the players involved and witnesses of the first spoken word from the mouth of the legendary figure. A truly historic moment in the Star Trek universe!
succeeded is also the illustration, three alien species in this book. Starting with the Yann (see p. 26), (cf. p. 56ff.) On the Opsarra to the T'chakat (see p. 108) bribe all presented races by their strangeness in appearance, culture and habit - no small matter in a series that is meant for children.

criticisms made aspects : Coming events cast their shadows. Great, legendary figures, it seems to be similar.
This can be clearly seen in data, because this book is a glance at later shaped the character of the figure. This also determines the future of Data last Christmas in his action more than the actual plot. So it is hardly surprising that the prospective cadets (!) A big career predicted is in the white of the readers already know that they will conform with the facts (that the term ' long career ' in this context, selected somewhat unhappy is ultimately proves Star Trek X ).
That alone would still get over to, but Data's entire thought and action hardly fits anyone, the human behavior and individual action are still unknown, or at least unfamiliar. The clumsy and sometimes over-zealous behavior from the first season missing the android, and places relatively calm and even sympathetic character traits of the day. He looks more of fifth, sixth or even seventh season sprung, but not similar to the figure in "The Mighty / Mission Farpoint " had its first performance.
Data is growing out here, as in many TNG episodes of its programming. Although this is purely not bad in principle, but that does Michael Jan Friedman the series ahead of something. The long and rocky road of development, the data in episodes like " Who Owns Data? "," evidence "or" dream analysis "laid back looks irrelevant, since, according to the book were all these facilities already present since the first day. An unworthy negation of aging, which made the character at all only appear so attractive.

A look back at the future Enterprise?

awards Instead, Friedman lightly the opportunity to describe Data's exciting early-stage appropriate and incorporate a first adventure in this great line of development. Worse, the person described is similar to the feelings inept android not bean!
envy (p. 28), discomfort (cf. 89) or pleasure (see p. 119) are just three examples from the astonishingly wide range of feelings, the data is going through. You can even courage (p. 121) to include, since at least since Star Trek VII know that courage may be an emotion.
courage of a truly new action can not blame Friedman, anyway. Robot toys made in China cheap production, an empty vessel, as in "Fast immortal" and a clash with striking similarity to 'The Guardian "contribute little to build up suspense.
The worst, however, weighs the kitsch, which is probably even for children much too much. If what is a type set that I really want to read in any Star Trek book, it is this:

" Data, I would like to be your friend you'd like to my friend? "(p. 120)

translation: As might be expected, stands, this work not out of the monotony of translation traditions of Heyne Verlag. The variety of unspoilt English words such as "Star Fleet " (p. 22), " starbases " (p. 25) or "Star Fleet Command "(p. 60) are scary-sounding translations such as" Earthborn "(p. 26)" absorber inertia "(p. 36) or" foreign beings "(p. 90) to contrastive.
Moreover, it is always amazing how you can accommodate such a small amount of text still so relatively few mistakes. Especially the combination of " That which is why [...]" (p. 38) and the use of "[...] place in all decks [...]" (p. 105) ' on all decks 'are other factors that prove that the translation oriented to the target group in any way.

anachronisms : has the background research for his book made extensive low-author Michael Jan Friedman carefully than the plans for the plot. He uses reference works such as the Star Trek Encyclopedia to identify the ship as the Tripoli Hokule'a e-Klass mentions the Stargazer and the USS Yosemite is in "Realm of Fear " a weighty presence. However, the ships have
Oberth class, how to learn in " The only survivor e", only thirteen decks, so it happened to sound strange, that is to find the engine room of the Yosemite on deck 17 (see 73). Also, Data's alleged inability to
lie (p. 54) is in "evidence" clearly refuted.
has rankled me most, however, another anomaly. If the people of T'chakat is now so high that it can beam through shields round - why must it then use communicators to detect life forms on board?

Conclusion: Where Data is on it, must not necessarily be data in it. That could be shortened as a draw overall conclusions because the data has described only by the names of those to do with her figure, which matured during the series with a unique Idividuum. Instead, the image of an already fully developed personality, the character can not be just and suffers in his description of many emotions. The combined action
stolen, the kitschy slots and the usual weak translation can be the historical 'revival' Data's the only advocate of the tape.

Memorable Quote :

" But without life support ... "
" Will we all die. Perhaps not all . But only those who breathe need to survive. "
Felai and Odril, p. 107

Rating : Data not Data ... Not Data!

What Are The Best Seats At The Silvercity Imax

The commands of the doctor

This review is my esteemed colleagues Swiss DomPatHug dedicated, which I recommended this book for obvious reasons, and Diane Duane who got lost one day on my little blog.

book jurisdiction Duane, Diane: The instructions of the doctor. Heyne, 1995/1990.

Story: Somewhere in the middle of nowhere between two spiral arms of the Milky Way a booger star system that not without reason has the nickname 'flying dirt' with. At that place there it just the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 , because on the fourth planet were not identified one or two but all three different intelligent species. These cases are very rare and is dedicated to the proud Starfleet ship design one of his primary reasons: the exploration of new life and new civilizations.
But Musca IV has taken the evolution is no way that would be characterized by a very high recognition value. On the contrary. The creatures encountered by Kirk, Spock and McCoy on the planet's surface are reminiscent of jute bags with shape-shifting properties Ents from Tolkien's' Lord of the Rings 'Or semi-phase-shifted boulders outside of space and time. While Kirk escapes
last contact with natives from the 'normal' time line, there is McCoy again in a rather unusual role. He must steer the affairs of the Enterprise as commanding officer, after he tied up by his closest friend and esteemed superiors before his disappearance on the captain's chair (of course only in a metaphorical sense) was. And as these shoes do not already several numbers were too large, suggests also the inconvenience to promptly: A cruiser the Klingons emerged abruptly in orbit and threatens not only the search disturbing to Kirk, but also the further exploration of the planet. When finally disappear Klingon external team members for its part of the timeline, the commander of the enemy ship blames for this course immediately to the inexperienced McCoy. The tension increases with each hour, for not only Klingon gain, but also an unknown warship gigantic proportions is on its way to small system called 'dead bugs' that suddenly finds at an interface of galactic power politics.

just stop what the tree says one

Praiseworthy aspects : A visit to Switzerland is always worthwhile. If it is out there still should be people who do not yet know that they can experience it in this book at last. After all, spends Star physician Leonard McCoy's sparsely sown holidays in the tranquil Alpine republic, although the Südstaatenabkömmling at a home stay is a wide range of possible dream destinations such as Tahiti that Seychelles or even the beaches Yemen could be offered.
But no! The old pill, it moves into the still glaciated Alps .
Well I for one must admit with regret that, I mean manageable journeys into the world could enter only on his way to Italy to one or another service station Swiss soil, and that national reports, as they are occasionally seen on 3sat , now contribute not just to the four-speaking canton of accumulation more attractive. But the book provides
to elicit even travel muffle furnace behind her. Lessons in geography (see p. 7 ff.) And history (cf. p. 13ff.) Prove that Switzerland is essentially immortal as those mysterious Virgin, as Queen of the Bernese Alps "[...] is "(p. 7) refers.
As a German, in the Star Trek universe, if any, will be considered then only with the obligatory Nazi comparison, you look as a bit wistfully at the other side of the Rhine and a small corner of the heart envy our neighbors, the consistently positive Adelschlag in the Star Trek universe , has awarded the Diane Duane the small state with this. The tourists
Switzerland McCoy is left in this work, a lot of space, which also uses the character happy, in order to produce on its eccentric way. Those like me who is one of the often cranky doctor to his favorite characters, will have his fun with this book because, apart from minor exceptions, it is possible the author Diane Duane, the often in the shadow of Kirk and Spock standing man into proper light to. They do not
waived to a certain humor, but never leads to snorting laugh with tears in his eyes, but at least sometimes able to provide for a benevolent grin.
also ensures continuity for the writer - at least with their own works.
In this work, you can claim a reunion with Harb Tanzer celebrate (see p. 113ff.), Who was already charged in ' Spock's World "with the management of the leisure decks. I was unclear in relation to that person but to wonder why he was attending a briefing and word came that not only the disappearance of the Captains had to content, but also for the high command of Starfleet was recorded. At least, that fact would, however, can begin to explain why McCoy on Subraumfunk almost the command had been withdrawn (see p. 185).
continuity on a very different level is the reference to the somewhat limited role of the captain in field work (see p. 45). Finally, it was quite daring each time by Kirk to accompany foreign troops and thus always run the risk that the commanding officer of a heavily armed ship forces hostile to fall into the hands or even killed is. Not least in TNG this idea again taken up and leads to significant relationships between the areas of competence Picard and Riker . If you like, you can interpret the events in this book as a link between two points in the Star Trek chronology. This
- almost certainly intended - which is however not alone, for even more prophetic impulses should not go unmentioned.
example, is "[...] the game of Twenty Questions Galactic [...]" long become reality and Kirk's stories about trout fishing strongly Denny Cranes Adventure in Nimmo Bay .

criticisms made aspects: First of all you have to criticize this book is that it accomplishes the feat of acting for its relatively small size of only 299 pages incredibly long-winded. The real action takes a run of 96 or to at least partly to get the ball rolling. The tension remains there with so much open to the ostentatious idleness ever on the track.
were also for my taste again the aliens a bit too exotic.
Now, one might interject that a book is the ideal platform to break the chains clanking relentless production costs.
also can be said that it was of course quite unlikely that all life in all of those bipedal or even humanoid (or " hominid ", see p. 103), as known from Star Trek.
This of course all his mistakes.
My point is that the frequency of humanoid forms rather is a stencil-like presentation, the authors have to deal with. Confirmed, I see this idea in the TNG episode "The Chase " which attests to the presence of human-like alien on set before him.
That does not mean the same that Diane Duane does not follow the guidelines. On the contrary, especially the classic series as a guide.
This can be as seen from the fact that a motive is recycled from a very special episode: As in "Balance of Terror " is the good old " submarine atmosphere " as a basis for a space battle. What in the series exciting and tragic comes along, drives, or flies, no, better yet, swimming (maybe 'dips') here fully against the wall.
Like the rest of the book, this section in the writing too long and space battles in terms of previous series and films (think of the USS Reliant ) is far too unreliable. The appetite goes by the reader at least at that moment entirely, in which Vice Captain McCoy in the middle of a small snack break begrudge maneuver (see p. 246). Not exactly a prime example of the power and credibility of the plot.
And when speaking of credibility, we should also not fail to mention the Klingons. Apart from the questionable command of the Klingon commander Kaiev style was not only the claim that arsenic is an integral part Klingon food culture is (see p. 272) adventurous, but "tabekh " the search for a secret plant substance called (S . 165). Everyone in reading even moderately talented recipient is based on the phonetic, tobacco 'quickly identified, the latest when it described the consequences of withdrawal is involved (see p. 168). Cold smoking cessation would be somewhere a comprehensible motive for the presence of a Klingon battle cruiser had been, but from that date on which the miracle herb reduced to a raw material for a Klingon Sambal-Olek (cf. p. 224), the effect is slightly thick.

Photobucket

tabekh - the taste of freedom and adventure

Finally, we should take the time to talk about the time line. The complex issue has seemingly despite desperate attempts to explain (see p. 289ff.) Does not consistently thought through. Since Duane in 1990 when her book appeared, the new television series "Star Trek - The Next Generation" must have been known, we can assume that the ', At' (which bummer of a name!) Future with the Federation should be familiar.
If these intelligent rock that is the product of a future in which everything (for example, also the call Kirk p. 289) has already been done, they should not really be convinced first of the righteousness of the organization are.
This lack of internal logic is also noticeable in other places. Sun can the flimsy explanation Spock's why he could not accept the command (see p.98) to convince any more than the sudden occurrence of an undisguised Klingon ship in orbit, without the long-range sensors the Enterprise would have been registered (see p. 159 ).

Translation: As a child of the Heyne and its translation machinery, it can not miss the typical house idioms that sound utterly strange, when their counterparts from the German dubbing is used.
We read here of the "standard orbit" (p. 43) instead of, Standard Orbit ', the' scanner Medo "(p. 73) instead of, medical tricorder ', or instead of" deactivated "(p. 240), disabled'.
get used to but eventually even. Later than the third or fourth book of the publishing house to read about such a thing deliberately, and depends only very rarely on it (except me of course).
are annoying if left on the other hand English words or cross between two languages, such as "Star Fleet " (p. 10) " Stunner-hit " (p. 194) or " sonic shower "(p. 113), which only by clumsy translations as "[...] tractors with an armed ship [...]" (p. 217) for 'one with tractor beam emitters equipped ship ', " Minzeisgetränk " (p. 9) for' Mint Julep 'or' Beiboothangaren "(p. 255) instead of 'be Shuttlebay exceeded'.
course does not always see everything that makes sense in English, also the same in German, how am completely in the pants can previous joke about " miss " and see " miss" (p. 125) clearly. But minimum standards such as the use of 'fly' instead of 'go "(p. 271), in terms of space ships should alone be considered for the reading flow will.
is otherwise the work of poor in spelling and grammar mistakes, if you can even dispense with minor glitches such as this:

"" skin was obviously the wrong word, which had the initial investigations revealed that the shell of the system as well was less than the rest multicellular "(p. 59)
Ronald M. Hahn
The translator took some liberties with his work out. But while reinterpretations such as "rubber Eagle Restaurant " (instead of 'rubber chicken banquets ', p. 33) or " Gummi Bears" (instead of ' jelly pastry ', p. 186) skillfully any avoid difficulties in understanding for the German reader who bothers Scotty , dialect 'always opens when the army chief engineer his mouth. His pronunciation is somewhere between Platt, Berlinerisch and Westfälisch (see p. 252), without the to make pleasant tone that strikes such as John Cleese in the German version the "Dead Parrot" Monty Python Sketches of .
works here the northern strike completely out of place and one wishes only that Scotty stops talking.
such a popular figure with a few freely translated into the opposite to such records is a benefit to which one can not necessarily be proud of.

Anachronisms: When speaking of the inner contradictions, we must keep Diane Duane's credit, it prevented the best of my knowledge and belief. Only a small error can be in this as well in all other of her novels.
words like "budget cuts " (p. 15) " Sold " (p. 86) or "rake in millions " (p. 256) should be in conflict with the abolition of monetary systems , in films such as " Star Trek IV - The Voyage was or episodes such as" The Neutral Zone "so clearly.
also necessary to accuse the author of being caught up in their own time. The magic of, Science Fiction scrolls' now that is something from when you read about that the other Enterprise eighty Terra bytes are provided (see p. 32). The problem might already be resolved today with 40 external hard drives, so it happened to sound strange that Kirk nearly hundred and fifty years in all seriousness, should be grateful.
But the use of cassettes, concrete " tapes" (p. 38), floppy (see p. 36) and slides (p. 37) seems to severely outdated.
what could be interpreted as a lack of foresight in the real world suggests that in order to almost prophetic foresight, if you look at its upcoming spin-off Star Trek's closer, for the view on the next generation also offers amazing parallels.
Thus reminding about the takeover of command of the Enterprise by the senior physician of the ship heavily to the TNG two-parter "Descent " which takes place Beverly Crusher on the chair of the Captains.
Even the concept of time, At (cf. p. 173) coincides remarkably with the Prophet from DS9 and the species of Delasi fit their description well at that alien doctor , in eleventh movie on the USS Kelvin served.
The number of objections to the later series is enjoyable as particularly low.
IT IS about the claim that the Orion would have a built Dysonsphäre (see p. 159), in contradiction to the episode " visit of the old Enterprise . The assertion that the Federation would not know any planet, the more intelligent species spawned at the same time (see p. 25), is inconsistent with the Xindi that even spawned at least six different breeds.
was also the term Chroniton particles 'here instead of the ubiquitous " Z particles " (p. 141) have been great. However, this kind of provision would have been scary, because these particles were until well after the book was published for the first time mentioned in Star Trek.

Conclusion: Friends of the equally eccentric, as sympathetic Doctor McCoy will be in this novel are their delight. He willingly admits Duane earned a place, which was denied him in the series too often. A real treat, who himself studied under the directories like him.
Not only pill, but also the idyllic Switzerland considers this book a worthy entry into the Star Trek universe and the poverty of anachronisms as an exciting contrast to the richness of reality has become predictions.
Unfortunately, the already however, everything has to offer the novel live. A determined for the small scale of terrifying verbosity the work as well as the poor translation.
Well-known motifs such as the asset to U-boats ajar space combat or the complexity of time travel is not to emulate the standards set by the classic series.

How Can I Masterbate With A Banana

individual fates

First a little sorry for the late review:
Once again at Cross Cult any problems with the publication of the novel was, and the release date postponed weeks after week, the arrival of the book coincided with a period in which I strongly involved in organizing a birthday party was. Since there was no free leisure hours, which could fill a novel. But postponed's not canceled:

Story: The wreckage of the Borg Invasion be swept over and chaos rules the Alpha Quadrant . Some worlds are destroyed and others. Some planets are refugee camps, others have not even able to recover from the scars of previous conflicts. The Federation and Klingon Empire are the reconstruction employs the Romulan Star Empire is divided as Germany after 1945 and most middle powers such as the Gorn which are Breen or Tzenkethi military or weakened politically.
gnaws But not only the power blocs of the region of the final incidence the Borg . The smallest wheel of any society are also facing new challenges: the citizens.
mining companies need new management staff, Vulcan can check whether the illogic of their feelings Borg little more and a university professor from Mars resumes for dipolomatischen service (to be listed on only a fraction of people).
It is possible the latter academics, to preserve the Federation of a sudden surprise. Middle of the galactic Tohuwabohus he succeeds, the common denominator in the unilateral cancellation of a relief supply agreement with Romulus , the sabotage of a Topalin -Raffenerie on Capella IV and Dilithium mine on Maxia Zeta IV and the threat of withdrawal of Zaldaner to find from the Federation. Together with the crew of the USS Aventine , the space ship of the newly minted captain Ezri Dax , succeeds Professor Pran Sonek uncover a conspiracy that could shift the balance of power of this part of the galaxy to the detriment of the Federation ...

praiseworthy aspects : "the fate of individuals is a potpourri of information that was scattered in all series and movies. In it you will find tag such as " Sehlat " (p. 30), " Nitrilin " (p. 290) or " Kligat " (p. 288) used as natural, as if they had a common heritage, knowledge of which every reader can be provided.
This creates the interesting situation that author DeCandido into a coherent and on the available information, anabolic universe portrays that exactly this is understandable. Only with precise knowledge and application of all resources available, it is possible to bring those well-researched impressive world to life.
"individual fates" is also a potpourri of guest stars. Besides just mentioned, familiar-sounding names like Open House (see p. 69), Toreth (see p. 99f.) Or Sonya Gomez (see p. 112f.), The reader will see you again with well-known figures such as edge celebrate Drex (see p. 77 et seq.) Fabian Stevens (see p. 111ff.) or Klag (p. 234ff.). Even larger figures like Nanietta Bacco (from the book "The Laws of the Federation "), Martok or Ezri Dax play an important part in the multi-layered plot. Only the over 150 Lenzen counting Admiral McCoy (see p. 194) himself could not produce William Shatner credible can.
Despite the many names from the focus of the book mostly on relatively insignificant individuals that have previously been little or not at all. The carefully chosen title of "individual fates" is to the effect programmatically, as in recurrent slots to read the farewell letter from an involuntarily rescued survivors Denevas (see p. 87f.), From riots to Alpha Centauri (see p. 109f. ) or spontaneous revenge shootings of surviving ex-Borg (see p. 169ff.) - A giant puzzle that actually manages to spark an oppressive sense of loss and moral dilemma.
have the highest relevance in most cases that "the fate of individuals" associated with the figure Sonek Pran and his family. The main hero of this story is a symbol of the 'Melting Pot' of the Federation, and a living testimony to the cooperation between different species: the one-quarter Bajoran , Betazoid , human and volcanic. By the way it felt DeCandido in its external descriptions (see, eg, p. 31), the American singer and Star Trek fan Arlo Guthrie after (p. 391), as one can imagine in this picture .
However limited the ironic use of this material not only to bonds outside the Star Trek world. The author demonstrates his expertise through targeted spoofs on internal production backgrounds, such as on the similarities between Trill and Kriosianern (see p. 30) on the evolution of Andorian probe of TOS to 'Enterprise' (p. 49) or the term "rock Vazkiz (286) on Capella IV - an allusion to the Vasquez Rocks , where in the book once again taken up Episode " In Friday's Child " was filmed.
He also does not take his own martial arts activity (see p. 402) on one of the characters of the book to project (see p. 215ff.). MOTORCYCLE
shows also, as he himself likes shortens, an astonishing ambivalence (for Americans). launch his novel with a Kissinger Quote (p. 7) and then a song Victor Jara (see p. 103ff.) use a reality check for the vulnerability of the human soul, I call courageous dealing with their own history. Finally, it was the active and illegal support of the then U.S. Secretary of State for Pinochet that the shooting Jaras allowed at all - a context which is likely at the clever design of the novel and the enigmatic figure Sonek measured DeCandido also have been aware.
Whom the reasons given so far are not enough to read the book, should be borne in mind that there is a new beginning with a difference also.
After the main character introduces already that military conflict can be the nucleus for further development and cooperation has this idea culminates in a development that will significantly affect future novels (p. 30ff.)
The Typhon pact. This political
and economic coalition of Tholians , Gorn, Kinshaya , Breen and Tzenkethi built after the abolition of the Borg as a threat to a new opponent. Particularly ingenious it appears that DeCandido uses a template from David Mack's Destiny trilogy to explain the origin of this unequal alliance. That just so much on the compensation obsessed President Bacco, the heads of state in a concentration mode (see p. 366ff.) Is a point that real life would not even be able to write better.
This is the Federation against uncertain times. Posted, demoralized and employs begs the question, what adventures, scandals and conflicts of the organization with this new opponent is yet to come.
It can hold as well as readers with the idea Sonek Pran S. 388:

" One thing I have to admit, I'm looking forward to find out. "

Or, as it pushes into the once again extremely readable essay Julian Wangler :

blazes A new cold war itself. "(p. 400)

The anticipation for me is certainly aroused, especially by Wangler well exposed the fact that the Federation had been concerned only with a key opponent (see p. 401), a proper Portion potential has to offer.
If that is not enough Entwicklungszündstoff, may indeed even be kept in mind that stand out in a rather dry casualty list (see p. 121) two well-known name among the many victims, especially: Miral Paris and B'Elanna Torres '.
The death of these two figures will keep the Voyager continued in book form and further provides that the work "individual fates" the status of a fork, which can hardly escape probably a friend of the Star Trek world of books.

criticisms made aspects: one must be a bookworm to enjoy this work extensively. Is incessantly the reception of "The Laws of the Federation" and of course the Destiny trilogy. Other at Cross Cult published books like " hero" (p. 98), "The Red King " (p. 178ff.) Or "quintessence " (p. 80) are worth to read, understand various cross-references to this. In addition, smaller references are also aimed at old Heyne publications such as "Planet of the weapons" (p. 80), "The Pandora Principle" (p. 113) or "My enemy, my ally" (p. 140) from.
So if that was not enough, many references relate to others, not yet published in German books. In particular Lost Era novels (see, eg, p. 64, p. 178 and p. 243), Starfleet Corps of Engineers (see, eg, p. 25, 111ff. Or S. 113) and the " A Time to ..."- series (see, eg, p. 200, p. 255ff. or p. 334ff.) deserve a mention, but also others such as Hertz JG Jewellers "The Left Hand of Destiny ( see p. 80), the first part of Vulcan's Soul series " Exodus" (p. 145) or DeCandidos own work " Diplomatic implausibility. Thereby missing the German reader information to an overall picture would be beneficial, so the occasional side trip to Beta memory in quite worth reading breaks.
One must also be a Fernseheule to capture the novel in its complexity. Even when serving large number of references to creating a closed world, we lose track, because the information literally rain down on the brain, especially as regards the scope of this book may soon run out of steam anyway. Thus, for example
it happen soon, that minor errors in the book simply ignores. It could be about to read that DeCandido an eight-year-old Talisker holds for a Scotch (See 332) or the Polish name Zbigniew for a last name (see p. 335). But these little things are hardly worth mentioning and the property is not a decisive impact on the final assessment. As noted
remains rather that arose, as in "The Laws of the Federation," a work that demands a lot from the reader and discourage fans have only superficially informed.
can convince Completely also not the action. This is something that is too shallow to knit and occasionally one wonders already, how such a transparent plot could actually work this way. The obligatory step in the lacrimal gland whether the oh so many victims is also a balancing act, the limits of the author is able to meet not always.
Only the packaging (this is not only the great cover meant) it is able to give the rather average story a worthy setting. able structure, style, craftsmanship are great, but the content is not always sufficient to keep pace.

translation : You have to the small Cross-Cult-Verlag admit already that he is now in terms of translations has greatly improved. Forgive and forget gaffe as "the thunder calls " because in this book are quite extensive errors in short supply. Therefore, kudos to translator and proof-reading!
whole "razor beast " particularly the translation of as " knife Beast " (p. 320) I must compliment sometimes quite explicitly, as it keeps itself minutely to the TNG template " adult children . "
course, the man is now but not entirely free of errors.
It starts with sentences like "He high officials from Paris . "(p. 91; it should 'from Paris' loud), " It does not take much so that they are offended [...]." (p. 249;! that) or the designation " mint julep " (p. 343, Mint -Julep !).

" Sonek no romantic thoughts had entertained against Rupi - which had been at least partly because he and Farin had been in his eyes, a pretty happy couple - but they simply regarded as a friend . "

was not only me but also my colleague ant immediately.
was particularly surprised me that of all is called a Croat consistently as " Hadžić " (eg, p. 144), although the letter 'C' in the Croatian exists at all and even Memory Beta, the correct spelling of "Hadžić" out. But as certainly not too many Croats will read this book in German and the error was consistently maintained at least, one can ignore the number of errors with regard to the workload of the translation work.

anachronisms: the thorough work makes deCandidos it difficult to find fault at all.
subject of the only opposition that I ever could make out, is the planet Krios . This world is already in the Enterprise episode "Precious Cargo " mentioned, is already in the TNG episode " Telltale signals " under the control of the Klingon Empire that is going against his rebellious people with brutal severity.
But the Klingon Ambassador Kell for the record, that the planet would probably, sooner or later granted independence in order to save resources.
This idea seems finally in "The Perfect Mate " become a reality to be, because there supports the Enterprise the royal family of the planet Krios - from the Klingon occupation seems to have nothing more to Krios.
This book is Krios but still a Klingon colony - from local residents, however nichtklingonischen we learn nothing.
But who knows - maybe there in the far reaches of the galaxy's more than a planet named Krios ...

Conclusion: From cover to content is "individual fates" a considerable work. A veritable potpourri of references, guest stars and small stories of life in the future of the Star Trek universe. Cleverly, the author creates the feel of a Star Trek future is to have a read unknown individuals to get word and provides a great transition for future writers.
disadvantage is only the mediocre plot, the real flood of information and the fact that the many allusions to other books remain that are not yet available in German language, incomprehensible.
"individual fates" So does want more, the voltage increases to the coming typhoon Pact series and also highlights how much work Cross Cult with the publication of other novels still in front of him.

Story: On her quite desperate search for replacement parts for Star Trek technology (which seems to have been in any case not designed for a lifetime of more than a season) makes use of the USS Voyager a space ship graveyard of gigantic proportions, to their seemingly insatiable hunger for raw materials to breastfeed. But Captain Janeway
crew has not reckoned with the host. The supposedly dead planet that serves as the final resting place wrecks markets, potential grave robbers with paranormal activity.
short, is haunted.
But besides the fact that ghosts are illogical, there's not another reason for the crew to search frantically run away. B'Elanna Torres , Harry Kim and Neelix suddenly disappeared on a reconnaissance mission and thereby arouse the protective instincts of their captains, so many of their bring sheep as possible to dry land (ie in their native Alpha Quadrant ) attempts.
so it leads the supposed spirit disguised as humanoids and gradually learns the whole truth. The three missing crew members were kidnapped in the past, and thanks to the impulsive temperament of the half Klingon B'Elanna already executed ...

praiseworthy aspects : "The Fugitive", composed by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and her husband, Dean Wesley Smith , is the first stand-alone novel, the television series Star Trek Voyager , because the actual number two was only the "The Guardian" named Novel of motion of the pilot episode "Caretaker " before it.
for this early stage in which even the TV series did not really, in the direction they would develop once managed the couple an excellent and unusual book.
Considering that only the pilot as a model for characters, situations and potential problems was available, it is particularly noteworthy, as all the characters are all accurately described. It seamlessly blends in with the optimism of the young season one and who want to can the act even as the missing piece of the puzzle B'Elanna's approach to the later of the rigid Starfleet guidelines suggest (p. 231).
Even the occasional interspersed humor stands comparison with the original to be ready (see eg Memorable quotes) and always fits well with the individuals and this book would be an impact, it would certainly be easy in the first half of the first season match.
The gap that Rusch and Smith brought by the absence of other Voyager episodes (except the pilot) was stuff they sent with references to other series. Thus one borrows the TOS inner eyelids the Vulcans from "Spock out of control" (P. 178) or the phase-shifted from cloaking the TNG episodes " So near and yet so far " and "The Pegasus " (p. 192).
is refreshingly new Comparatively dealing with it now rather faded theme of time travel, as the authors trace once a relatively new approach:
The different time periods and parallel universes of a planet to be as residential areas of use the seams bursting civilization. Combined with the possibility of mistakes and sudden changes to be prevented by specific time shifts, this results in an interesting situation, especially since the penalties within the company the Alcawellianer be similar draconian as that of Edo.
One detail I liked especially after all: The initial dislike of one at first swallow so repulsive beverage such as coffee (see p. 123) struck me as logical and understandable for an alien who has never been so in touch with something has come. His subsequent habituation to caffeine (see p. 156) I found a hand personally to understand the other hand bothered me know that caffeine seems to have the same effect throughout the Milky , although there are so many physiological differences between the species .

Indispensable export hit the earth?

criticisms made aspects: Which brings us to arrive already at the criticisms.
While Rusch and Smith could not possibly know that it would ever come to that, instinctively, they used a motif that is already disturbed early in Voyager.
At the beginning of many episodes is the crew that is looking for some spare parts, raw materials for major ship components or materials that could contribute to maintenance of Starfleet technology be useful.
One wonders, in the course of the series somehow, why USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D not every second episode spacedock spent to overhaul the delicate new systems.
This is in fact continue here. However, the object of desire, not about any important matter as Dilithium , Omicron particles or 247th element, but " Armalkolit " that is to be constantly "[...], the Oltion circuits of Warpprozessors repair "(p. 7). Not only is this fact to the famous 'knitting pattern F' corresponds, to the maximum degree of meaning and object-wireless technology Babbel it also reached with ease.
If there ever such a Warpprozessor should be, what are his duties? Why must he necessarily be constructed from this material?
And above all,
Why was this piece of technology previously mentioned it before?
Very simple:
Because it is horrendous nonsense and should be only a weak motive to fly the spaceship graveyard that Neelix knows just hearsay!
exhausting Similarly, it provides the many comments which are intended to introduce the possibly not so well known figures.
given by three examples:

. He [ Tuvok ] always spoke very clearly "(p. 8)

" Although he lacked [Kim] yet to experience, but he was already a capable officer. "(p. 13)

" She knew [Janeway] it with the same certainty that they had seen before: when they took the order of the first directive and decided in the Delta Quadrant to stay, instead of taking the easy way home. "(p. 213/214)

They are less useful information rather than neglect worthy platitudes that interrupt the reading flow and contribute even more out of place if you know the crew of the ship.
Mitigating circumstances may of course the reason be argued that this early work, as the name suggests, it already has been released early. These items interfere with first line in the reader of today, the Voyager has long been a television series that was already completed many years ago and has long been one of the cornerstones of the franchise.
Will we find other points of criticism, you have already use the translation or the figure of the masked villain Kjanders.
This character is in fact simply unnecessary. If he had, at least, as announced over the ship, or at least made an attempt to!
Instead, he mimes an insipid tourists with homesickness, whose sole purpose in the release of alleged insider information exists. Wasted potential, which would have given the plot nor additional explosive and thus represents a good story, but delivers no truly exceptional development.
For if the dead crew members and time travel appear in a book, you can already count on one finger, that nothing is going to happen, which could influence the course of the series.

translation: With a new series, there was apparently no reason for Heyne, their wayward and to see the different synchronization vocabulary. We read so well in the Delta Quadrant of " Starfleet "(p. 9), instead of the ' Starfleet ', from ' insignia communicator " (p. 23) instead of the' communicator 'or' country group "(p. 49) instead of the ' field teams '. New
only the term " Maquisard " (p. 231) for a member of the Maquis '.
is more surprising, the inconsistency with which this insistence was operated on the wrong terms. First, we read suddenly "turn off " (p. 131) instead of the previous books in often used ' deactivate'.
to read while the other constantly of " Medo Department " (p. 194), "Medo parameters " (p. 203) or "Medo- Tricorder" (p. 230), but the doctor does not seem to be affected too much by this prefix-attack. In this work, it is called either " Medical (!) emergency program" (p. 204) or even "[...] destined for the emergency holographic Medo program [...]" (S . 190).
a real pain for the eyes and the brain.

Anachronisms : Rusch and Smith let the poor Neelix quite look old.
described 17 years ago Meanwhile experiences (p. 96) would extend into a period in which he would have lived on Rinax , and the moon had not yet been destroyed by the Haakonianern .
But who knows, maybe they have Neelix's parents brought the boy to this " trip.
evil gossip is to say, however, that the species would need more sleep than men. Neelix need for rest is noted that even in episodes like "Waking Moments ", " night " or "A " which, according to his colleagues, nothing.
striking is the fact that the novel constantly from Holodoc as "Dr. Zimmerman is spoken ". By the series finale " Final 'allows the doctor that is not even to buy a suitable name, so it is surprising to wonder why it appeals to all the world as if it were to the in" The Holosyndrom "was first spotted inventor the program itself act.
The reason I was able to learn of Robert Picardo , the cast of MHNs itself. This was in fact in the course of a conference titled " Meet your Star 'on the last weekend in October 2010 to see Mannheim .
where he described to my demands that he dissuade Rick Berman himself, the doctor who is already in the script for "The Caretaker" with 'Dr. Zimmerman was out ', first name once in the opening credits and later in general, bear a name. Picardo stated for the record that otherwise no later than midway through the first season of the last name had been transferred to the hologram and only the desire for a name in testimony " The bottleneck" of these early plans.
could Seen Rusch and Smith, which apparently the script for the pilot was available, not be foreseen that the personal intervention of the actor would make them here a spanner in the works.

Conclusion : "The Escape" is a somewhat woody Star Trek novel in which once again typical clichés from the Voyager start time to be served. The search for raw materials is the starting point of the story, free techno Babbel makes the basis and contradictions scratching at the biographies of the characters. The translation is a sad testimony to the insistence on their own Errors.
If one looks over it, then the views of an extraordinary story about time travel and to characters that were very insightful and even humorous set into the light. The first independent novel to the Voyager series is a promising start, worth reading.

Memorable quotes :

" also ... Who's afraid of a few ghosts? "
Janeway, p. 19

" now I know the people well enough. So I know hunches are often based on false information handled. You probably have noticed something that you do not understand. But a hidden Part of you is reasonable enough to think it important. "
" Good heavens. I think you have just insulted me. "
" logic is never personal. "
" Yes. But their application can be quite personal. "
Tuvok and Paris , p. 136
