Story: On a dead planet discovered an away team of the USS Tripoli a strange creature: Resting on a stone slab there is a machine whose external form (more or less) exact copy of a human form.
As expected, however, the colonists can not track down on the planet's surface, the group switched to the tin man, to get the desired answers about the fate of that group. But the Android can not provide any useful information. Although it does not receive satisfactory
statements about the mysterious disappearance of the 411 residents Omicron Thetas marked, this moment the birth of an extraordinary Starfleet officer: Data .
Shortly after its activation, is applying the Android on the advice of the captains of Tripoli at the Starfleet Academy . But Data's way is so long as stony, and the wheels of bureaucracy grind slowly interstellar.
defeated only after three years he can do on the way to Earth. But data and three other candidates who are on board a ship of the Oberth-class get ahead of schedule an idea of what a great responsibility with their career choice is associated.
Shortly after the USS Yosemite namely a foreign, possibly hostile minded ship shall disappear, suddenly the entire crew with the exception of four young Academy candidate. The Android needs his leadership to demonstrate combat drones defend and solve the mystery of the missing crew ...

praiseworthy aspects : In the television series " Trek - The Next Generation " distinguished themselves above all those episodes with a high degree of attractiveness, in which the android Data was the center of action. And without question include episodes like " Sherlock Holmes Data", "Data's days" or the two-part "Battle for the Klingon Empire "of the highlights of the series.
this successful driving force should be inserted for a series of books, therefore only a logical step. The series "Star Fleet cadet" imposes itself in this context is a natural. Only this can biographical gaps are closed, because an eventful childhood was the machine man's not already granted. Therefore, it is not surprising that this work begins with a truly epochal bang: (. P. 9ff) Activation Data's .
The reader gets a glimpse of the surrounding circumstances, get to know the players involved and witnesses of the first spoken word from the mouth of the legendary figure. A truly historic moment in the Star Trek universe!
succeeded is also the illustration, three alien species in this book. Starting with the Yann (see p. 26), (cf. p. 56ff.) On the Opsarra to the T'chakat (see p. 108) bribe all presented races by their strangeness in appearance, culture and habit - no small matter in a series that is meant for children.

criticisms made aspects : Coming events cast their shadows. Great, legendary figures, it seems to be similar.
This can be clearly seen in data, because this book is a glance at later shaped the character of the figure. This also determines the future of Data last Christmas in his action more than the actual plot. So it is hardly surprising that the prospective cadets (!) A big career predicted is in the white of the readers already know that they will conform with the facts (that the term ' long career ' in this context, selected somewhat unhappy is ultimately proves Star Trek X ).
That alone would still get over to, but Data's entire thought and action hardly fits anyone, the human behavior and individual action are still unknown, or at least unfamiliar. The clumsy and sometimes over-zealous behavior from the first season missing the android, and places relatively calm and even sympathetic character traits of the day. He looks more of fifth, sixth or even seventh season sprung, but not similar to the figure in "The Mighty / Mission Farpoint " had its first performance.
Data is growing out here, as in many TNG episodes of its programming. Although this is purely not bad in principle, but that does Michael Jan Friedman the series ahead of something. The long and rocky road of development, the data in episodes like " Who Owns Data? "," evidence "or" dream analysis "laid back looks irrelevant, since, according to the book were all these facilities already present since the first day. An unworthy negation of aging, which made the character at all only appear so attractive.

A look back at the future Enterprise?

awards Instead, Friedman lightly the opportunity to describe Data's exciting early-stage appropriate and incorporate a first adventure in this great line of development. Worse, the person described is similar to the feelings inept android not bean!
envy (p. 28), discomfort (cf. 89) or pleasure (see p. 119) are just three examples from the astonishingly wide range of feelings, the data is going through. You can even courage (p. 121) to include, since at least since Star Trek VII know that courage may be an emotion.
courage of a truly new action can not blame Friedman, anyway. Robot toys made in China cheap production, an empty vessel, as in "Fast immortal" and a clash with striking similarity to 'The Guardian "contribute little to build up suspense.
The worst, however, weighs the kitsch, which is probably even for children much too much. If what is a type set that I really want to read in any Star Trek book, it is this:

" Data, I would like to be your friend you'd like to my friend? "(p. 120)

translation: As might be expected, stands, this work not out of the monotony of translation traditions of Heyne Verlag. The variety of unspoilt English words such as "Star Fleet " (p. 22), " starbases " (p. 25) or "Star Fleet Command "(p. 60) are scary-sounding translations such as" Earthborn "(p. 26)" absorber inertia "(p. 36) or" foreign beings "(p. 90) to contrastive.
Moreover, it is always amazing how you can accommodate such a small amount of text still so relatively few mistakes. Especially the combination of " That which is why [...]" (p. 38) and the use of "[...] place in all decks [...]" (p. 105) ' on all decks 'are other factors that prove that the translation oriented to the target group in any way.

anachronisms : has the background research for his book made extensive low-author Michael Jan Friedman carefully than the plans for the plot. He uses reference works such as the Star Trek Encyclopedia to identify the ship as the Tripoli Hokule'a e-Klass mentions the Stargazer and the USS Yosemite is in "Realm of Fear " a weighty presence. However, the ships have
Oberth class, how to learn in " The only survivor e", only thirteen decks, so it happened to sound strange, that is to find the engine room of the Yosemite on deck 17 (see 73). Also, Data's alleged inability to
lie (p. 54) is in "evidence" clearly refuted.
has rankled me most, however, another anomaly. If the people of T'chakat is now so high that it can beam through shields round - why must it then use communicators to detect life forms on board?

Conclusion: Where Data is on it, must not necessarily be data in it. That could be shortened as a draw overall conclusions because the data has described only by the names of those to do with her figure, which matured during the series with a unique Idividuum. Instead, the image of an already fully developed personality, the character can not be just and suffers in his description of many emotions. The combined action
stolen, the kitschy slots and the usual weak translation can be the historical 'revival' Data's the only advocate of the tape.

Memorable Quote :

" But without life support ... "
" Will we all die. Perhaps not all . But only those who breathe need to survive. "
Felai and Odril, p. 107

Rating : Data not Data ... Not Data!
