Story: Lonely, leave quietly and looms a gigantic ancient space station in the vast emptiness of space. The crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 -D the sophisticated object discovered quite by accident and it immediately starts to study the huge artifact in more detail.
Hardly anyone in the ship's crew seems more suited for the job as the android Data second officer and his friend Geordi LaForge , who is indeed blind, but able to see a visual aid called Visor things that the unaided human eye remain hidden.
The supposed advantage is reversed, however, quickly reversed, because in the course of its investigation, both accidentally solve a mechanism from which they can rematerialisieren light years from their previous position.
While the Enterprise sets off to find her two missing crew members, there are Data and LaForge again on a comparatively primitive occupied orbital station. The first contact with the locals but falls out nicely, but just barely missed the two officers shortly after a treacherous assassination. Before they provided you meet them in a dictatorial run company that sees in them but gods, however also makes the blame for the rest of civilization of their culture with them. In order to survive, to see Data and Geordi forced a double game to play: First, they leave the dictator Shar-Lon in faith, to be messengers of the gods, while at the same time collaborating with the local opposition ...

praiseworthy aspects : If you want to criticize this work, one should first of all get hold The circumstances in mind.
The then brand-new Star Trek television series " The Next Generation " was during the formation time of the 1988 published in the U.S. novel started just once and it is therefore hardly surprising that the events described in the book does not have references to transcend " Rikers temptation" (p. 192). After all, is
"peacekeepers" to the Novel by Lisa Transportation " Mission Farpoint " the first original novel of the next century in Germany (in the original American deserves Diane Carey "ghost ship" the pole position).
makes Seen DeWeese solid work: the characters are well made and above all the timeless charm of the first season of TNG is captured credible.
The book brings together a same extent the moralizing aspects of the classic series with new characters and new technology - a kind of quasi- Kirk sausage in Picard -gown. Most particularly reinforces this impression with a closer examination of the apparently anti-authoritarian chief engineer educated Argyle (cf. p. 66ff.) that fills probably not without ulterior motives the (still) empty space in the machine room in Scotty -esque manner.
Pure nostalgia also comes up in those moments that has Tasha Yar their performance (see, eg, p. 10, p. 126 ff. Or p. 147ff.), Because at these points is the modern reader, of course, long her death in "The disease " anticipates, always the pioneer feeling of the first season brute rubbed under the nose - the optimism of the next generation awakens long-buried believed memories of the almost carefree experimentation stage of the young series, in the long shadow of like the Borg , the Maquis or Duras family was felt anything yet.
is positive to note also that the DeWeese often very one-sided representations of planets and confers Gravitiationsunterschiede station - a logical idea in the series and films too infrequently (- not to say 'never' -) are taken into account (see p. 218f.).

criticisms made aspects : Warp With this novel has nothing to really only peripherally. The plot, it can namely a total of 256 pages is not to produce significant voltage or even to arouse a sympathetic interest.
On the contrary, the comparisons here listening to the first season already, as there at least some of the episodes could muster something more dramatic.
Mitigating circumstances may be made only as told by the early date of claim. But to admit with all due understanding of how the book must be that the content of the experienced TNG fan necessarily familiar. Later, following seasons namely conjure with episodes like "The Iconia probes " and up "The interface " a high recognition value.
However, looking at the end of the book closer, you have to draw very different parallels. There the day and the life of the field teams will namely saved by the acting talent Worf , posing as grouchy alien to a fleet of applied partisan deter to commit a massacre, which is also the deaths of some of his teammates would result.
who counts himself an old hand at the genre will recognize in this kind of upscale acting Bluff quite a popular subject of this series is already in episodes like " Emissary ", " The pact with the devil " and " The ladies Troi "sufficiently was treated.
While Worf this charade in "The Emissary" yes may decrease somewhere, as they at least approach the dignity, the seriousness and preserves the integrity of the figure, the same experiment reminds us more of the supposedly lovesick Picard in "The Women Troi" or the overzealous hell character from "The pact with the devil."
used in derogatory manner DeWeese here also the clumsy motif that Worf's face already unleashed "The Neutral Zone " Fear and Loathing in technologically less advanced individuals. While it is nice that the Klingons so a little more leeway given to , but in "Heart of Glory " chosen direction follows the author does not even begin here.
Stole is finally also prominent in other areas: the telekinetic super helmet, by the amateur prophet Shar-Lon relates his unlimited power, reminded me strongly of another science-fiction icon ...

A helmet to rule them all ...

translation: The translation of the German Copyright relatively early (1989) suggests quite rightly, the worst. The translation was finally synchronized and dusted before the series was seen in our latitudes.
Thus there is little intersection with the usual from the boob tube vocabulary, but the usual Heyne talk of " disc component " (p. 11), (162 pages) on " Starfleet " up to " Medo- Team "(p. 215). Somewhere there is
understand in this situation even that one falls back on tried and tested to meet a yet to broadcast in Germany and synchronized series adequate. That the publisher but in the following books on these concepts persisted, although film and television had long since set other standards testifies only of inflexibility and stubbornness.
course, further, that featured some of the new concepts introduced in shape not as strong as in later TNG books. Thus we find both a comparatively cumbersome " insignia communicator" (p. 33) the more non-gala " breast badge " (p. 18) and also the " Visor " (p. 16), Although an actual article accept (see p. 68) but not with a consistent capitalization.
is also on the translation product, the disproportionate presence of the nonsense word "deactivate " (p. 33, p. 57; P. 71, p. 79, p. 106, p. 155, p. 161, p. 191, p. 206, p. 218, p. 235) really nerve-wracking. In the wider context
fits this does to the extremely rough translation, radiated with phrases such as "[...] an unknown destination [...]" (p. 97), " artificial space objects " (S . 213) or " panel " (p. 25, as a translation for 'panel'!) to convince not necessarily understand. The unintentionally comic high point of this book is to the effect, finally, the phrase "mental ears" (p. 113, instead of original 'mental net') that this sparse power still touches the final icing on the cake.

also important in old age: Listening to the feelings of others

anachronisms : Of course, it seems kind of odd to say on Page 158 Data read the following sentence:

" My body is not entirely organic. "

How now, organic Data's body is to function in any way?
What at first sounds questionable certainly is for someone who has just seen a few episodes the first season of TNG, only logical. As otherwise should have android body for pathogens in "Gift ideas " Date? The
this episode of the subsequent events was studiously ignored surprising, given that this episode a bit more.
One sees the author after the fact that he admits Klingons not hibernation (see p. 12), although in "The Emissary" exactly was the case and ignored comments which suggest that after an initiated transport could no longer move (see p. 40), although Lt. Barclay in "Realm of Fear " The same was clear. Similarly, the claim would Geordi's Visor to Sleep store (see p. 68), does not match the scenes in " Telltale signals " match.
Since this should be seen but only in the distant future, the second, fourth and sixth season, these errors hardly DeWeese to chalk.
That is why the other irregularities more heavily. Sun Troi known as the Captain by his first name (see p. 10) - a procedure that in the excised scenes of Star Trek Nemesis or the Novel Lisa Transportation should not be taken to get any love and not even in the first season was heard. The described Individual shields (see p. 16) appeared perhaps in the TAS episode "The disembodied beings " on but not in the next Star Trek series.
also holds Picard in his ready room no means a " tiger fish " (p. 96, in the English original "tiger fish") in its wall aquarium, but a " Lionfish " (in English 'lion fish ') called Livingston .

Conclusion: who yearns for the good old days, which still indicated the optimism of the first season set the tone in the next century, at this point have been thrilled.
But this return comes at a price, because it requires significant compromises. Low Voltage, rough translations, and so familiar as undignified end are the most serious items on the list of deficiencies. The first independent
TNG novel in Germany is therefore not necessarily the most outstanding works of the guild and shines primarily through its production date. Taking a look behind the facade makes the rapidly wide disillusionment.

Memorable quotes :

" I'm not your ' Imzadi ', Commander. "Tasha Yar
, p. 147

Review : Maybe the first, but at best mediocre.
